If you are worried about your young child falling out of bed, you may be considering buying toddler bed rails. As the name suggests these rails attach to the bed and act as a barrier thus preventing your child from falling out of the bed. But you have to be careful. If they are not of good quality or are attached incorrectly they can cause your child an injury. There have been cases of toddlers getting caught between the mattress and the bed rail and this can lead to the child suffocating. Thankfully these cases are rare and this tragedy can be avoided by using the appropriate rails to suit the bed in question.
Less rare are the bumps and bruises caused when junior bumps his head into the rail at night so you should consider a padded version rather than basic metal or wood. As with any products you buy for kids be sure they carry the appropriate safety mark that shows they have been tested and approved. You do not want to risk using faulty products. Do not use this product with children younger than 2 years of age.
If you buy a child’s novelty bed such as a Thomas the Train bed or a cars toddler bed, you do not need toddler bed rails. Usually beds made specifically for young children are very low so if a child were to fall out they will not cause themselves any serious damage.
But if you are travelling or you are using a normal single or double bed, the distance to the floor increases and a child could break an arm or leg if they were to fall out of the bed. If your child is going to sleep in one of these beds, then you should really consider purchasing some toddler bed rails. This would also apply if you intended on travelling a lot as children are more likely to be restless and move even more when sleeping in a strange environment.
Toddler bed rails are not expensive. You can find good quality brands like the Safety 1st secure top bed rail for less than 40 dollars. This is an excellent product as not only does is it padded so your child won’t hurt themselves if they bang into it during the night, but it also has an indicator that tells you when it is fitted correctly. This toddler rail also folds down to allow for easy bed making. If your child is afraid of the dark or has trouble getting to sleep, you could consider the Summer Infant Sure and Secure double bedrail which has a built in night light in addition to playing a lullaby.
At the end of the day, toddler bed rails are a great investment and will help both parents and child get a better night’s sleep. Just be sure you follow the directions and buy the right one for the bed you have chosen.
